Farewell to Lulu (2002-2010)

Lulu, 2002-2010

Farewell to Lulu, my sassy and beloved guinea pig. She was 7 and a half years old (quite an old lady in guinea pig years!) She had a great big personality, a piercing squeak that she never failed to emit when she was excited or hungry, an undying love for tomatoes, and a tendency to squirt pee in the faces of other guinea pigs who annoyed her. She was a real character and loved practical jokes, but quite disliked baths, cilantro, and nail-cuttings. She was always up for cuddling in a lap, particularly if it involved hand-feeding of spinach and movie-watching.

Lulu was gradually paralyzed by a neurological disease that in time left her with only one working leg. She was brave, chirpy and hungry even during her final visit to the vet, but I could tell that she was tired and frustrated by her condition. We had her put to sleep this afternoon at a clinic in Park Slope. Up until the very end she was a really special friend to me.

  1. Oh Julia---I am so sorry. It is a huge loss when a pet leaves us. Lulu sounded like a wonderful gal.
