A surprising fungus.


Come ON, Mother Nature. This is ridiculous.

Here is another mushroom from the Stinkhorn family: you are seeing Phallus hadriani at its very best. The round bits you see at the base are part of the volva, which is a sort of egg from which this pornographic mushroom grows. According to the Mushroom Expert, the Phallus mushrooms can grow ten inches in just a few hours.

Sadly, I did not take this photo; and I believe the Phallus hadriani and its close relative the Phallus impudicus (called the Pricke Mushroom by botanist John Gerard in his General Historie of Plants in 1597) are more abundant west of the Mississippi. However, I may have hope of finding Phallus ravenelii, which grows 'round here. I'll keep my fingers crossed.
